WINDER -- Winder police on Saturday named a suspect in a Toys For Tots scam targeting merchants in north Georgia, including Gwinnett and Barrow counties.
Marsha Lynn Foster, 47, of Decatur, is wanted for holding herself out as a Toys For Tots representative to scam businesses of donations. She's known to drive a black Chevy Cobalt, police said.
Winder police have secured warrants charging Foster with identity theft and theft by deception. She remained at large Saturday afternoon.
"This has been an unfortunate incident," said Winder police spokeswoman Sgt. Rachel Love. "As the holidays are quickly approaching, there are many charitable organizations that are genuinely seeking donations."
Foster is said to have targeted Stars and Strikes in Dacula and a Barberitos franchise in Winder, at least.
Victims interviewed this week described the suspect as articulate and conniving.
The alleged scam is a first for Toys For Tots, which has ambitions of providing nearly a half-million metro Atlanta kids with toys this year, a representative said this week.
Love urged merchants in Winder who've been approached by Foster to call her at 678-425-6887.
"Merchants not within the city of Winder should contact their local law enforcement agency," she said.
