South names Thomas as new softball head coach
South Gwinnett has named former East Paulding coach Audra Thomas as its new head softball coach. She replaces Kelli Mayo, who resigned following this past season.
Thomas was a three-time NCAA Division II All-American at Kennesaw State and a two-time national catcher of the year. She hit .398 for her career and holds the school record for single-season slugging percentage (.825). She was inducted into the Owls' Hall of Fame in 2007.
She also was a first-round Women's Professional Softball League selection.
Providence's Shealy signs with Iowa State gymnastics
Providence Christian senior Michelle Shealy, who led the Stars to the state high school championship last season, has signed a letter of intent with Iowa State University.
Shealy, a former junior international competitor for the U.S., won the 2009 Junior Olympic Senior A beam championship. The Snellville resident also won beam, floor and all-around state high school titles for Providence.
Broncos' Sweeney picks Georgia
Brookwood senior Conor Sweeney has accepted an offer to swim for the University of Georgia. He will be honored with a signing cermeony Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Broncos' Lodge.
Sweeney won state high school championships in the 200 and 500 freestyle races last season, helping the Broncos to the team title.
North Gwinnett's White commits to Presbyterian baseball
North Gwinnett pitcher Chad White has committed to the Presbyterian College baseball program. He is the son of Christy and Chip White.
White was 5-4 with two saves, 48 strikeouts and a 3.25 ERA in 56 innings last season. He has a career record of 7-4 with three saves and a 2.95 ERA.
He is the third Bulldog senior baseball player to commit to a college program, joining Christopher Hawkins (Tennessee) and Nick Jones (Valdosta State).
Mill Creek to honor Grimes, Brody on Monday
Mill Creek will honor college baseball signees Greg Brody and Matthew Grimes on Monday with a 7 p.m. ceremony at the high school. Brody has committed to Belmont University and Grimes has accepted an offer from Georgia Tech.
Dacula's Miles, Sieber choose colleges
Dacula fastpitch softball players Allie Miles and Charlotte Sieber will be honored Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the high school for signing with college programs. Miles is headed to Georgia Southern and Sieber is bound for Anderson University (S.C.).
Old Suwanee wins state title
Old Suwanee Christian School of Buford recently won the ACCE girls cross country state championship in the JV division. Savannah Carnahan (second, 14 minutes, 25 seconds), Mary Beth Boatright (third, 14:32) and Amber Terrell (15th, 16:34) were the team's top finishers.
