Cedar Hill Elementary trailer destroyed in fire

LAWRENCEVILLE -- A fire early Saturday morning destroyed a portable trailer that housed a second-grade classroom at Cedar Hill Elementary School in Lawrenceville.

A passer-by who reportedly saw smoke and flames coming from behind the school on Sugarloaf Parkway called 911 just before 3:30 a.m.

To gain access to the blaze, firefighters had to cut through a lock on a gate, said Capt. Thomas Rutledge, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Fire Department. They also had to force entry into the trailer. The fire was under control by 4 a.m.

Radiant heat from the fire caused moderate damage to an exterior wall of a nearby trailer, but there was no damage to the main school building.

The exact cause of the blaze is currently undetermined, but fire investigators believe the fire started inside the classroom near the heating unit, Rutledge said. The cause of the fire does not appear to be suspicious.

No one was at the school when firefighters arrived, and no injuries were reported.

A maintenance crew from the school system started working Saturday morning to clean up the debris and set up another trailer to house the class, spokeswoman Sloan Roach said.

The school's principal plans to send a letter home Monday to parents about the fire, Roach said.
