Gwinnett Daily Post
Gwinnett's two defending state champions are both ranked No. 1 in the preseason coaches' basketball poll for PrepCountry.com.
The Buford and Wesleyan girls are hardly the only Gwinnett teams getting a lot of respect going into the season, however.
Three other girls teams and four boys teams are listed in the Top 10s, with the Parkview and Norcross girls No. 2 and No. 3 behind defending state champion Redan in Class AAAAA.
Gwinnett also has another team ranked No. 2. The Greater Atlanta Christian boys are just behind defending champ Dublin in Class AA. Like the Parkview girls, the GAC boys lost in the state semifinals last season to the eventual champion.
Gwinnett has three of the top five girls teams in Class AAAAA, with Mill Creek ranked No. 5 behind Redan, Parkview, Norcross and Campbell.
The Norcross boys, which had their streak of three consecutive Class AAAAA championships with a quarterfinals loss last season, are No. 4 in the preseason rankings behind Wheeler, Milton and Westlake. South Gwinnett is ranked No. 7.
Wesleyan and GAC have both their boys and girls teams ranked. The Wesleyan boys are No. 6 in Class A, where the girls are No. 1. The GAC girls are No. 5 in Class AA behind top-ranked Buford.
The high school basketball season officially gets under way on Tuesday. The featured game has the Parkview girls hosting Duluth, which made it to the state quarterfinals last season.
