SNELLVILLE -- No one was injured but an early morning fire destroyed one home and damaged the exterior of a nearby home.
According to reports, firefighters responded to the 3800 block of Ferncliff Road just after midnight Thursday after neighbors and a passerby called to report the blaze.
By the time crews arrived, said Gwinnett Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge, flames were "shooting through the roof" and the house was about 70 percent involved with fire.
Because of the heavy fire and a roof collapse, firefighters battled the blaze from the outside, Rutledge said.
"Firefighters flowed water from several hose lines as well as an aerial ladder pipe to extinguish the bulk of the flames and to protect nearby exposures," Rutledge said.
"Radiant heat from the fire immediately threatened the houses on either side of the main fire building."
Neighbors said a man lives in the home, but Rutledge said he wasn't home at the time.
The exact cause of the fire is undetermined and remains under investigation.
