Police: 2 traffic deaths on same road

DACULA -- In the span of three days, two motorists died -- and a third remains critical -- following accidents on a winding stretch of Ga. Highway 324.

Police said Auburn resident Robert R. Wilson, 21, died Sunday night when he lost control of a 2006 Toyota Scion TC and slammed into a tree. The crash happened about 8:30 p.m. near Fence Road.

"The driver was negotiating a curve at a high rate of speed when he lost control," said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli.

Wilson later died at Gwinnett Medical Center. Toxicology reports are pending, Schiralli said.

Another fatal crash occurred roughly two miles away on Friday afternoon, killing another Auburn man.

The earlier wreck involved two vehicles -- a 2004 Hummer H2 and a 2007 Honda Accord -- colliding on the highway near Belfaire Trace.

That crash killed 45-year-old Timothy Christopher, who was driving the Honda, at the scene, police said. His female passenger, who was not identified, was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center, where she remained in critical condition Monday, police said.

The driver of the Hummer escaped injury. Investigators determined Christopher failed to yield while making a left turn, police said.

Schiralli said the incidents underscore the need for motorists to obey uniformed rules of the road -- namely speed limits, seat belt laws and road signs indicating hills or curves.

"These are posted to make the driver aware of road conditions," he said, "and (to) prepare them to drive accordingly."
