Parks team and school officials restore stream near Collins Hill

LAWRENCEVILLE - A stream next to Collins Hill High School has been restored, after severe erosion threatened the water quality.

To save the stream, improve aquatic habitat and prevent erosion from washing out a trail, Gwinnett's water resources and parks staff teamed up with school officials to tackle the project.

The stream is also near Collins Hill Park and aquatic center.

"This work has resulted in an ideal area for public access, nature study and bird watching in addition to reducing turbidity and sediment in the stream," said Pete Wright of the county's Stormwater Management Utility.

The $1.2 million price tag was paid with money from water and sewer fees and the county's stormwater utility.

Last month, commissioners reduced the project's cost by $71,511 in a contract with Appalachian Environmental Services.
