Central grad McGuire named first-team All-American

North Georgia outfielder Courtney McGuire, a Central Gwinnett grad, was named a first-team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She helped North Georgia to its first NCAA Division II World Series appearance this season. The team was 50-5 with a No. 3 final ranking.

McGuire hit .360 with 12 home runs and 48 RBIs. She was joined on the North Georgia squad by fellow Gwinnett grads Jessica Skeels (Central Gwinnett), Kim Stercay (Parkview) and Natasha Willemse (Peachtree Ridge).

Fowler gets all-tourney honors

Collins Hill grad Carmen Fowler, a fastpitch softball player at Southeast Missouri, was named recently to the All-Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Team. She hit .333 with three RBIs in the tourney.

Archer football to host running event at Tribble Mill Park

Archer's new football program will host its inaugural Tiger Trot on June 13 at Tribble Mill Park. The event features a 5K at 8:30 a.m. and a one-mile fun run/walk at 8 a.m.

Dacula to accept equipment donations at Tri-County tourney

Dacula High's softball team is co-hosting the 68-team Tri-County Softball Tournament, which begins Tuesday and runs through June 7, at Dacula Park. Tuesday through Friday times are 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday softball is from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Falcons will be collecting new and used baseball and softball equipment at the tournament that will be sent to underprivileged youngsters in the Dominican Republic.

Hudson to host summer diving program

Longtime Gwinnett County Public Schools diving coach Bettie Hudson is hosting her summer program for the ninth straight year.

Sessions are available from June 1 to Oct. 12 on Monday and Wednesday nights at the Mountain Park Aquatic Center. No diving experience necessary.
