Memorial Day events to honor veterans, fallen heroes

LAWRENCEVILLE - More than six decades ago, five small monuments were placed in a remote corner of Thrasher Park as a tribute to five Norcross men who died in World War II.

On Memorial Day, the city will reaffirm its appreciation of the fallen war heroes by dedicating new plaques installed into a granite wall at the Norcross park. A ceremony honoring Joseph S. Davidson, Aubrey E. Davidson, Wyly Q. Letson, Joseph H. Mitchell and Ralph Westbrook will begin at 4 p.m. Monday at the park located at Buchanan Street and Park Drive.

"We thought it would be a fitting tribute to place these plaques so they could be viewed by future generations," said Connie Weathers, a member of the Norcross Parks and Greenspace Commission. "This event is a way for us to honor these men and their families, as well as all veterans in Norcross."

Gwinnett County will also honor fallen war heroes Monday at the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial. Georgia Gwinnett College President Daniel J. Kaufman, a retired brigadier general, will deliver the keynote address at the 1 p.m. event.

The 16th annual Memorial Day Parade in Dacula is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Monday. This year's theme is "Remembering the Meaning of Memorial Day." The parade route begins at Hebron Baptist Church, proceeds

down Dacula Road, turns onto Second Avenue and ends at Dacula High School.
