Student list gets girl suspended
WINDER - A seventh-grade Barrow County Schools student has been suspended by school officials for allegedly compiling a threatening list.
The student was on a school bus en route to Westside Middle School on Tuesday when administrators learned of the list. The student claimed to have no actual intent to fulfill any of the written threats and, according to the school system, her self-proclaimed motives for compiling the list were not commensurate with the threats themselves. School officials determined the threats were not credible and no threat to student or teacher safety existed, however the student was suspended for the remainder of the school year.
School Resource Officers from the Barrow County Sheriff's Office began investigating on Wednesday, interviewing witnesses and gathering information. It was not known as of press time whether any charges would be filed against the student.
Criminal charge filed against fired bus driver
LAWRENCEVILLE - A Gwinnett County school bus driver fired for inappropriate behavior is now behind bars.
A Gwinnett County school resource officer filed the arrest warrant Friday for Eugene Edward Flathmann, according to Gwinnett County Public Schools spokesman Jorge Quintana. Flathman was arrested Friday evening by Gwinnett County deputies.
Flathmann faces one count of cruelty to children, according to jail records. The former bus driver is accused of squirting a Chattahoochee Elementary School student with a toy water gun on Tuesday and striking the student after the child threatened to spit on him.
A school resource officer and the school system's human resources department began investigating the incident Tuesday, Quintana said.
Flathmann's employment was terminated on Wednesday "because of the alleged use of the water gun on the student," Quintana said.
Flathmann is being held at the Gwinnett County Jail on $5,700 bond.
