Elderly couple beaten, hospitalized after robbery

LOGANVILLE - Investigators are searching for three black men in their 20s who accosted and severely beat an elderly couple in their Loganville home Thursday, police said.

The couple, who police did not identify, remained hospitalized Friday. Both are older than age 65.

"We have reason to believe there was some sort of weapon involved, (judging) by the blunt force trauma injuries," Loganville police Chief Michael McHugh said.

The man was in serious condition at Gwinnett Medical Center, while his wife was listed in critical but stable condition at Atlanta Medical Center.

The robbery happened about 1 p.m. Thursday at the couple's Covington Road home. One of the suspects approached the man about buying his pickup truck, and the couple let all three suspects inside, McHugh said.

They fled in what appeared to be an older model Chevy Malibu or Laguna, he said.

Police are still trying to determine what the assailants lifted from the home.

"Investigators are working, following up leads," McHugh said. "They're still working feverishly."

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Walton County Sheriff's Office are assisting in the investigation.
