Another homestand: Looking back and forward

The Gwinnett Braves return home tonight with a .500 record for the first time since they returned 4-4 from the first road trip in Durham. They lost three straight in their new home to Norfolk after that one. But the 5-3 road trip was another good one. The G-Braves are now 13-9 on the road. The G-Braves scored 35 runs in the eight games against just 24 allowed.

The run production didn't hinge on any one player. Brian Barton added seven points to his average, up to .237, on the trip, but for the most part no player jumped or down over the eight games. Strong pitching combined with runs for the success. No surprise.

At 20-20 the G-Braves are seven games out of first in the South behind Norfolk.

That was on the field.

The big news from the trip was the recalling of RHP Kris Medlen, who pitches tonight for Atlanta. Medlen left the G-Braves 5-0 with a 1.19 ERA (it was under 1 when he was called up but he gave up a run in his one final inning the next day). Medlen got the call before top prospect and roommate RHP Tommy Hanson. Hanson is 2-3 with a 1.70 ERA.

The back and forth news continued on the off day Wednesday. When Omar Infante broke his hand yesterday in the Atlanta Braves' blowout win over Colorado it opened up the roster spot for Diory Hernandez to be recalled to the big team. Hernandez has struggled with nine errors in the field, but his hitting .355 with 20 RBIs in just 29 games.

But that's past.

The homestand begins with Hanson throwing against Jeremy Bonderman down on a rehab start from the Detroit Tigers tonight. Bonderman was 3-4 with a 4.29 ERA before a shoulder injury put him on the DL. And Bonderman just gets the rehab assignments rolling.

Jorge Campillo will start for the G-Braves this weekend and Tom Glavine aims to throw as well. Glavine has yet to make a major league start this year after off-season surgery. Campillo on the DL with rotator cuff tendonitis, last played for Atlanta on April 16.

We'll know more on the weekend and homestand pitching situation when we get to the ballpark later today.
