May 2009 - Foster Care Awareness Month

Each year, thousands of children enter and leave Georgia's foster care system. Many people are unaware of the issues surrounding these children's circumstances, the challenges they face and how easy it is to help.

Showing their support and concern for children in our community, on May 5, 2009 Gwinnett County Commissioners presented to the Foster Children's Foundation (FCF) a Resolution that recognizes May 2009 as Foster Care Awareness Month in Gwinnett County, GA.

Since incorporation in 2003, the Foster Children's Foundation has provided many services and resources to help these less fortunate children and engage the community to make a difference. Whether it's a crib for a new born, a toothbrush, comb, school clothes, hygiene products or school supplies, the FCF is there to help provide for and raise the self esteem of the children. Children can also get help from caring volunteers, mentors and tutors who help in many ways to raise the children's self esteem and let them know that people do care. The Foster Children's Foundation also provides the Tomorrow Matters mentoring program to help teens establish goals, learn independent living skills and acquire the tools, resources and adult connections they will need to be successful and reach their potential as young adults.

The month of May is a time to raise much needed awareness to the needs of some of our most vulnerable citizens, our children. To find out how you and others you know can truly make a difference, call the Foster Children's Foundation today at 770-623-6135, visit their website at www.fosterchildrensfoundation.org or schedule a time for you or your group to visit the resource center. Extend a hand! Change a life! The joy will last a lifetime!
