SUWANEE - This Friday Gwinnett residents can kick off Memorial Day weekend with a celebration at Town Center Park sponsored by the Daily Post and the city of Suwanee.
Those who attend will be treated to a free concert by the Gwinnett Community Band and the Sugar Hill LDS Choir, each of which have performed throughout metro Atlanta.
The Command Exhibition Parachute Team from Fort Benning, the Silver Wings, will also make an appearance if the weather permits.
The team was organized in 1965 but can trace its origins back to 1958, according to the Fort Benning Web site. Made up of soldiers throughout the post's airborne community, the Silver Wings perform live aerial demonstrations all over the country supporting the Army and Fort Benning's public relations and recruiting.
"This is the fifth year we've held this Memorial Day weekend concert and we think it's a great patriotic start to a patriotic weekend," Daily Post publisher J.K. Murphy said. "The music will have a God-bless-America theme and will honor all those who have served in the U.S. armed forces."
Murphy said the concert is free but attendees are encouraged to bring a canned good which will be collected at the concert and donated to local food banks.
City events coordinator Amy Doherty said there's no better way to kick off the long weekend than with local talent and an air show that gives her goose bumps every time she sees it.
"We are lucky to have local area performers this year with the Gwinnett Community Band and Sugar Hill Stakes Choir," she said. "It will be a great way to spend your Friday night before a holiday weekend."
Parking will be available at the Town Center Park. Officials encourage attendees to bring picnic baskets, blankets and chairs but said alcohol is not allowed.
