Lightning blamed in 2 separate blazes

Fire crews in Gwinnett and Barrow counties worked blazes sparked by lightning within a 12-hour period beginning Wednesday, officials said.

Barrow firefighters responded Wednesday afternoon to a Bethlehem home in the 900 block of Nature Trail, where flames shot through the structure's roof. Residents reported the home had been hit by lightning.

"Our crews attacked the fire very aggressively and were able to bring (it) under control in minutes," said Barrow County Fire Department spokesman Lt. Scott Dakin.

The fire displaced a family of three, who are being assisted by the American Red Cross, Dakin said. An investigation continues.

Later, in Gwinnett, a family of four woke when lighting blasted their Loganville home in the 1200 block of Preserve Park Drive about 4:30 a.m.

Firefighters found a smoldering fire of hot embers in the floor system of the two-story home. The fire was quickly extinguished, said Gwinnett County Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge.

No injuries were reported.
