Hearing set for couple in drowning

LAWRENCEVILLE - A Buford couple will remain jailed until at least Thursday after a toddler drowned in their uncovered backyard pool last week, officials said Monday.

A probable cause hearing for Shawn and Tanya Moon is scheduled Thursday afternoon in Gwinnett Magistrate Court, where a judge denied the married couple bond last weekend.

Police arrested the Moons on second-degree child cruelty and reckless conduct charges after Abiola Bankolemoh, 2, climbed into their above-ground pool and did not resurface Thursday afternoon.

The victim was among four children Tanya Moon, 34, was employed to baby-sit when he drowned at their Bradford Walk Trail home.

Investigators said Tanya Moon watched the children on a daily basis, though she was not a licensed child caretaker. Anyone who cares for more than two children at their private residence for payment is required to be licensed by the state, officials with the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning said.

Tanya Moon told investigators she had left the room where the children were playing to use the restroom when the child slipped outside. She later found him at the bottom of the pool, attempted CPR and called 911. Continued CPR efforts by medics failed to resuscitate the boy.

Police arrested Tanya Moon and her husband, who was elsewhere at the time, following an investigation at the home. A separate investigation by the Division of Family and Children Services is pending.
