Warrant issued for suspect in '05 slaying

LAWRENCEVILLE - Authorities have issued a murder warrant in connection with the 2005 killing of a Lawrenceville woman found dead inside a vehicle in front of a Gloster Road church.

According to warrants issued Friday, police believe that on Sept. 10, 2005, Hector Alexander Acosta, then 16 years old, shot his 26-year-old ex-girlfriend, Maria Olvera-Reyes, in the head several times.

Officers responding to a suspicious vehicle call in front of the St. Marguerite d-Youville Catholic Church found Olvera-Reyes' body slumped over in the driver's seat at about 2:16 p.m., reports said, as parishioners were arriving for a Saturday vigil.

Authorities immediately labeled the incident a homicide and developed a suspect in the case, though it is unclear who that suspect was or if any arrests were made.

Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli said cold case investigators revisited the case recently and were able to show enough probable cause to have arrest warrants issued.

Police said Acosta has used the alias "Jose Luis" and may have returned to his native Honduras, though they are not sure.

Schiralli said the warrant will now be turned over to the fugitive squad.
