Statham woman dies in crash on Ga. 316
Fourth fatal Barrow wreck in a month

STATHAM - A two-car crash on Ga. Highway 316 claimed the life of a Barrow County woman and seriously injured a Buford man Monday evening.

Betty Jane Wheeler, 77, of Statham, was killed about 5 p.m. when her Toyota Solara was struck by a Honda Civic headed west on the highway at Barber Creek Road, between Winder and Athens, officials said.

The driver of the Honda, Justin Craig Stephens, age unknown, incurred serious injuries that are not considered life-threatening, said Barrow County Sheriff's Office spokesman Maj. Todd Druse. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Wheeler, who was not wearing a seat belt, was attempting to cross Ga. Highway 316 at the time of impact, said Druse. The intersection is not equipped with traffic lights.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash to determine the exact cause.

Druse said the crash marks the fourth vehicle fatality in Barrow County in less than a month.
