Lawal named state's top men's player
Norcross grad Gani Lawal, a sophomore at Georgia Tech, was announced Monday as the Georgia Men's College Player of the Year Award winner by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
Lawal was a third-team All-ACC selection this past season, averaging 15 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocks. The 6-foot-9 forward was second in the ACC in shooting percentage (55.0) and first in double-doubles with 14.
Norcross resident and St. Pius grad Katie Kulavic was named the state's top women's player. She is the all-time leading scorer in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
The Atlanta club named Ron Sattele of the Oglethorpe women's team and Dip Metress of the Augusta State men's team as its state coaches of the year.
Austin named MVC Tournament MVP
Collins Hill grad Ashley Austin earned Missouri Valley Conference Tournament MVP honors on Sunday after powering ninth-seeded Evansville to the tourney title and an automatic NCAA Tournament berth.
The senior averaged 15.5 points and 4.3 rebounds, scoring a school-record 62 points in four tourney games. She scored a team-high 17 points in a 47-45, MVC finals upset of second-seeded Creighton.
The NCAA berth is Evansville's first since 1998-99.
Collins Hill wrestling racks up awards
The Collins Hill wrestling team had three members of its program pick up individual awards at the High School State Championship Award Show on Sunday at Center Stage Theater.
State champions T.J. Mitchell and Taylor Knapp were named Junior and Senior of the Year by Team Georgia and the Georgia National Wrestling Alliance. The Eagles' head coach, Cliff Ramos, was honored as Coach of the Year.
The Georgia Wresting Coaches Association also announced its annual Dream Team, which picks the top wrestler in each weight class. Collins Hill had five members make the team - Bazell Partridge at 103 pounds, Mitchell (119), Joel Smith (140), Gary Tiller (152) and Knapp (160).
Parkview grads Bud and Rick Hennebaul also picked up awards. Rick was given the Tony Mills Award, which is goes to the top referee, and Bud was honored with the Lifetime Achievement award.
Top recruit Bryce Brown signs with Vols
WICHITA, Kan. - Standout high school running back Bryce Brown has signed a letter of intent with Tennessee.
The nation's top-ranked recruit announced his decision from the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in Wichita on Monday.
