Lilburn suspends red-light camera use

LILBURN - For at least the next 90 days, if you run through a red-light at an intersection featuring a surveillance camera within the Lilburn city limits, you will not be issued a citation from a photograph.

Because of changes in state policy, the Lilburn City Council voted Monday night to suspend its automated traffic enforcement program from the Lasercraft company. No tickets will be issued as result of this camera operation.

"We're going to re-evaluate that program," Councilman Eddie Price said. A decision will be made following the moratorium whether to continue or terminate the operation.

The firm of Smith, Welch and Brittain LLP was approved by the council to serve as attorneys in the lawsuit brought by Gwinnett County government against the city of Lilburn and the other 12 Gwinnett cities pertaining to the Service Delivery Strategy. A city's legal fee in this matter will be determined by individual SPLOST funds.

In other business, the council:

· Issued a special-use permit to Providence Christian Academy to use a public address system from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesday for a fun run at the school. A neighbor who lives right next to the school's field spoke to the panel, objecting to this type of activity because of privacy concerns. Price said the sound system will be directed away from the residential area.

· Agreed to give $39,750 for construction on the Camp Creek/Rockbridge connection on the Greenway Trail System. The project must be completed within 60 days.

· Approved the design and lighting project for Holly Ridge Drive, which will include the building of sidewalks and safety lighting.

· Agreed to changes to Wal-Mart's exterior paint scheme to reflect modernization of its store, along with a new logo.

· OK'd a request from the Downtown Development Authority for $200,000 for economic development.

· Authorized the director of Planning and Economic Development to replace the City Clerk as issuing authority both for business applications under the city's Occupation Tax Ordinance and for the Lilburn Sign Ordinance.
