DULUTH - This past Monday marked the 105th birthday of legendary children's author Dr. Seuss.
In celebration of that historic event in the world of children's literature, the Duluth Police Department recently participated in Read Across America, sponsored annually by the National Education Association around Seuss' March 2 birthday. Now in its 12th year, the program focuses on helping students master basic reading skills while also motivating them to read more. On Feb. 27, Officer Liz Strickland visited the Monarch School located on Main Street to read books to a group of children in honor of the celebration. After the presentation, the children received stickers, coloring books and Officer Strickland's trading card. According to Lt. Bill Stevens of the department, the program is part of Duluth's Community Oriented Police Services program. "The goal is to enhance the quality of community life in Duluth by establishing partnerships between residents, businesses, schools and police," Stevens said in a released statement. "This is just one of the many ways the Duluth C.O.P.S. division is involved in our schools."
