LAWRENCEVILLE - Police say a brazen carjacker shot and injured a woman as she pumped gas Wednesday night.
The victim, who was not identified, was gassing up her blue, 2007 Ford Escape about 11:45 p.m. when a man attacked her at a QuikTrip station on U.S. Highway 29, just south of Ronald Reagan Parkway.
The woman briefly struggled with her assailant, who then shot her, police said. He fled in her vehicle, which carries a Gwinnett County tag, number 854 XDL.
The victim remains in stable condition at an area hospital, said Gwinnett police spokeswoman Cpl. Illana Spellman. She was undergoing surgery Thursday afternoon and had not yet provided investigators with a description of the suspect.
At the gas station, "witnesses gave descriptions, but some of the descriptions were contradictory," Spellman said.
Spellman wouldn't say where the woman was physically shot, or if the shooting was intentional or caused by the struggle.
Police ask anyone with information to call the criminal investigation division at 770-513-5300.
Spellman advised anyone who spots the Ford Escape to use extreme caution.
"Do not approach or touch the vehicle," she said. "Call 911 immediately."
