WINDER - A Winder man remained jailed Tuesday on charges he prompted a three-hour standoff with police last week.
Kenneth Thornton, 47, peacefully surrendered and was arrested late Friday night after police say he flashed a weapon and refused to leave his Creekwood Road residence. The incident began when caseworkers with the Department of Family and Children's Services reported having difficulty with Thornton during an interview, said Barrow County Sheriff's Office spokesman Investigator Matt Guthas. After initially speaking with deputies, Thornton "retreated into the interior of his home and emerged with a firearm, resulting in the standoff," Guthas said. Crisis negotiators responded and successfully talked Thornton - who was alone during the standoff - into surrender, Guthas said. Guthas was unsure if any children were home beforehand. No injuries were reported. Thornton is charged with three counts of simple assault, one count of misdemeanor obstruction of officers and one count of felony obstruction of officers. He remains at the Barrow County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing, Guthas said.More like this story
