2 killed, 1 jailed in auto crashes

Authorities on Monday said two motorists were killed and another was jailed in pre-snow crashes this past weekend.

The first wreck, a head-on collision, occurred about 8 p.m. Saturday on Buford Highway at City Hall Street in Buford.

Lance R. Sperring, 65, of Buford died when a southbound 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer crossed the center lane and struck the 2003 Cadillac Deville he was driving, police said. Sperring died at the scene.

The other driver, who was not identified, was treated at Gwinnett Medical Center for minor injuries. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Illana Spellman said.

The exact cause of the crash is under investigation.

"There's no indication that alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor in this case," Spellman said.

Such was not the case in a separate deadly crash in the wee hours of Sunday morning near Suwanee, authorities said.

About 4:30 a.m., drivers heading north on Interstate 85 called 911 to report the driver of a black GMC Envoy was speeding and driving erratically. Police believe that driver, Lenovis Leakel Smith, 34, of Dallas, Ga., then lost control and collided with the passenger door of a 2004 Ford Mustang, sending both vehicles spinning off the interstate, police said.

The Mustang's driver, Tiara M. Harn, 22, of Gainesville died on scene.

Smith was treated for minor injuries at the scene and arrested on charges of vehicular homicide, DUI, cocaine possession and reckless driving. He remains at the Gwinnett County Jail without bond.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, Spellman said. The investigation will continue.
