SUWANEE - If the 2009 version of the Suwanee Day festival has a certain 1960s appeal to it, it isn't purely accidental.
After reviewing more than 80 entries, city officials have selected a colorful, retro design submitted by Suwanee resident Shannon Scheels as the official festival logo.
The design will be printed on T-shirts and used on other festival promotional materials.
"The selection panel loved the bright colors and tie-dyed lettering in Shannon's design," Amy Doherty, Suwanee events coordinator, said. "Her design reflects the energy and celebratory nature of Suwanee Day."
Before submitting her design, Scheels had already planned to begin online design classes through the Art Institute of Atlanta.
"When I entered the contest, I really did it as a challenge to myself," Scheels said. "I never thought in a million years that I would win. Winning this contest affirmed my decision to move forward with school and gave me a lot more confidence in my skills. It's such a thrill to be an integral part of this year's celebration of community."
Suwanee Day, the city's annual community celebration, will be held on Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. at Town Center Park.
