LAWRENCEVILLE - Georgia Gwinnett College is now fully accredited, the college's president announced Thursday.
The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools voted Thursday to grant initial accreditation to the University System of Georgia institution.
The decision was made two years and 10 months after the college opened in Lawrenceville. The college applied for accreditation less than two years ago.
GGC President Daniel Kaufman said he is "jubilant."
"For us as an institution, it means we can grow," Kaufman said. "Now we can be the truly comprehensive institution that our community deserves."
As an accredited school, Georgia Gwinnett College can move forward in its plans to offer education and nursing programs. Students and faculty members can now apply for scholarships or research grants awarded only to accredited institutions.
"It's a great day for us, and it's a great day for our community," Kaufman said.
