NORCROSS - An early afternoon crash on southbound Interstate 85 south of Jimmy Carter Boulevard left two people dead, a half dozen injured and closed the interstate for hours Saturday.
According to Gwinnett County Police Department spokeswoman Cpl. Illana Spellman, the driver of a beige Chevrolet Trailblazer swerved and lost control attempting to avoid another vehicle the driver thought was going to enter her lane. The Trailblazer struck a black BMW, then flipped, ejecting two passengers.
One passenger who was ejected died at the scene. The other was transported to an area hospital, where that person was pronounced dead.
The remaining six people in the Trailblazer were hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening. The driver of the BMW was not injured.
The deceased were identified as 69-year-old Graciela Villamizar and 15-year-old Javier Mejia, both of Kennesaw.
According to Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge, the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 were closed from about 1:08 p.m. due to the crash wreckage and emergency equipment in the roadway. Spellman said some lanes reopened around 4 p.m.
Spellman said alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash.
