BOE set to accept millage rate at meeting

SUWANEE - The Gwinnett County Board of Education is expected to adopt the millage rate at its monthly business meeting Thursday.

The recommended millage rate - 19.25 mills for maintenance and operations and 1.3 mills for debt service - was tentatively adopted in May when the school board approved a $2 billion budget for the upcoming fiscal year. If approved, this will be the fifth consecutive year the millage rate has been 20.55 mills.

Because of the decline in the housing market, however, the school system anticipates collecting $577,485,568 in property taxes, about $9.4 million less than it expects to collect during the current fiscal year, which ends June 30.

No public hearing is required, but constituents can address the board during an open forum that begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

The business meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Instructional Support Center, 437 Old Peachtree Road N.W., in Suwanee.
