Salvatore Decrescenzo

Salvatore “Sal” DeCrescenzo , 49, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 12, 2009 at home with his family and close friends by his side. Sal was a resident of Hickory Bluff, GA. He was born on May 6, 1960 in New York, and grew up on Isle of Hope in Savannah, GA. Sal attended St. James Parochial School, Benedictine, and later graduated from H.V. Jenkins High School in 1978. He attended Georgia Southern. While in Savannah, Sal played rugby and served one term as president of the Savannah Shamrocks. Sal dedicated six years to his country by serving in the United States Air Force. Sal worked for Hughes Supply in Savannah, and he and his wife Rhonda moved to Atlanta, GA to continue his work there. He later worked for Parnell Martin/ Ferguson Enterprises in Atlanta. He transferred to Brunswick to open a new branch for Ferguson Enterprises. Sal loved coaching his son Brandon's sports teams. In Atlanta, Sal coached youth baseball, basketball, and football. Sal also coached Brookwood's 8th Grade football team for many years. In Hickory Bluff, Sal could often be found fishing , gardening, and riding his golf cart with his dog Roxie “Slinky” DeCrescenzo. He had a quick wit, and loved to tease and joke with friends. Sal was an avid reader, and he hated to lose at board games. He had a great love for children, and took the time to teach sports, oyster shucking, and fishing to his son, daughter, nieces and nephews. Sal is survived by his wife of 24 years, Rhonda Harvey DeCrescenzo, his son Brandon DeCrescenzo, daughter Amanda “Mandy” Richardson; two sisters, Anne DeCrescenzo and Theresa DeCrescenzo Moyer; two brothers, Joey DeCrescenzo and John DeCrescenzo, nephews, Evan Owens, Colton Bradley, and Grayson Moyer; nieces Kasey DeCrescenzo and Kyra Moyer; mother-in-law Marie Harvey Taggart Black, and one granddaughter on the way; brothers-in-law, Arnold “Arnie” Harvey and Bryan “Keith” Harvey. Sal also leaves behind many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Theresa DeCrescenzo, and his father-in-law, Arnold LaRyan Harvey. Sal will be missed as a loving husband, father, brother, coach, and friend to many. A memorial service honoring Sal's life will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, June 16 at Fox & Weeks, 7200 Hodgson Memorial Drive in Savannah with the Rev. Msgr. John Kenneally officiating. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, Georgia or The American Cancer Society.
