Braselton budget cuts lead to cutting jobs

BRASELTON - Braselton's Town Council could cut its planning department in half because of dwindling revenues in the wake of the housing market collapse.

With no property taxes to fund the government, Town Manager Jennifer Dees said the council will consider a $2.6 million general fund budget for Fiscal Year 2010, which begins July 1. That is a reduction in revenue of $400,000, or 14 percent.

The town's water and sewer fund will be reduced from $6.8 million to $4.9 million.

The biggest cut, though, is proposed for the planning and development department, where the six employees would be cut to three.

"The fees are down; the department doesn't have as much work, so we are going to cut the department," Dees said, adding that one employee could be transferred to the finance department.
