SWAT standoff ends peacefully

LAWRENCEVILLE - An apparent domestic dispute that caused the Gwinnett County police SWAT team to deploy ended without incident Tuesday.

Police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli said the unit was sent to 837 Hillary Court at about 1 p.m. in reference to a possible barricaded gunman.

Police have not named the man, but Schiralli said authorities received information that there were weapons inside the home.

"For the safety of the community we activated our SWAT unit along with a negotiator," Schiralli said.

Prior to the SWAT team responding, uniformed officers met with a woman who said she and her live-in boyfriend had been involved in a dispute earlier. She also told police, reports said, that he was an Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agent.

About 10 minutes after the SWAT team's arrival, the man came outside peacefully and was taken into police custody, Schiralli said.

The man was taken to an area hospital for a psychological evaluation, Schiralli said, and is charged with one count of simple assault.
