Police: Man steals car to get to court

LAWRENCEVILLE - A Lawrenceville man was arrested Tuesday morning after police said he hijacked his girlfriend's car to show up for court on time.

Marcus Tavon Brown was taken into custody shortly after he arrived at Lawrenceville Municipal Court, authorities said.

"We got a call from a lady who said a guy had taken her car at gunpoint and was headed to court," Lawrenceville police spokesman Capt. Greg Vaughn said.

Vaughn said the woman later recanted her story, but that Brown is still charged with theft by receiving, carrying a concealed weapon and driving with a suspended license.

"He did have a weapon with him and we found out the gun was stolen out of another state," Vaughn said.

It is unclear what Brown was heading to court for, but jail records show he was arrested in April for possession with the intent to distribute marijuana and again in May for disorderly conduct.
