Martin, Methodist claim national titles

Norcross grad Susan Martin won her second straight individual title, leading Methodist College to its 12th straight team crown at the recent NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Martin, a junior, posted a four-day total of 294, with rounds of 73, 71, 73 and 77. That was good for a three-shot win over Jessica Urban of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Methodist won the team championship, its 22nd overall NCAA women's golf title, by 25 strokes over runner-up Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Brookwood grad Hackney earns NCAA bid

Louisville thrower and Brookwood grad Andrew Hackney received an at-large bid this week to the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.

Hackney qualified for his first NCAA finals based on his performance at the NCAA Mideast Regional, where he threw a season- and personal-best toss of 189 feet, 7 inches in the discus.

Heffley named freshman All-American

Western Carolina's Ross Heffley, a Brookwood grad, picked up another honor Wednesday when he was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team. He was selected earlier as the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year by both the coaches and the media.

Heffley hit .391 this season with separate hitting streaks of 13 and 14 games.

Muhammad headed to Miami-Dade hoops

Norcross' Taariq Muhammad has signed to play basketball at Miami-Dade College, a junior college powerhouse in Florida. Muhammad started three season as the Blue Devils' point guard, helping the team to two Class AAAAA state championships.

Former Bulldogg Murphy to play for LaGrange

Chandlor Murphy, a three-year starting strong safety at Winder-Barrow, will continue his football career at LaGrange College. Murphy was recruited to LaGrange as a defensive back.

Olympian Edwards announces Suwanee tourney

Four-time Olympic gold medalist Teresa Edwards announced plans Thursday to host The Teresa Edwards 3-on-3-on-3 Knockout Basketball Tournament at the Suwanee Sports Academy. The tourney will be held Aug. 1.

There will be limited bracket space, with cash prizes awarded to the top three men's and women's teams. The winning team receives $1,000.
