Former officer under investigation for stealing

LAWRENCEVILLE - A former Gwinnett County police officer is under investigation for allegedly stealing from the department.

Lt. David Butler, 47, resigned on July 16 after being confronted with the allegations, police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli said.

According to Schiralli, the Professional Standards Unit (Internal Affairs) initiated the investigation after it received an internal complaint regarding the theft.

Police aren't saying what was allegedly stolen or disclosing further details, citing an ongoing investigation.

"What I can say is that it was not items from the evidence or property rooms," Schiralli said.

Butler was a 24-year-veteran of the department and was last assigned to the Central Precinct in Duluth, where he served as watch commander.

Schiralli said the case remains active.
