BUFORD - A 4-year-old girl who was hospitalized after she nearly drowned at a Lake Lanier park died Monday, said Ted Bailey, chief investigator for the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office said.
Athra Abdulla went missing while playing in the water Saturday at Lower Overlook Park at Lake Lanier. Swimmers and people on jet skis and boats rushed to find her, and a rescuer had pulled the girl to shore and an off-duty nurse had begun CPR by the time emergency crews arrived. Athra was taken to Northside Forsyth Hospital and was later transported to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, where she died. The Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services was saddened to learn of the girl's death, spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge said. "Paramedics had hoped for a continued positive outcome for the patient," Rutledge said. "Our thoughts and prayers are now with the family."More like this story
