Modern Knitterie and Fiber Arts Shop Opens

DULUTH - The historic downtown area has added a shop that might remind patrons of the old times when grandmothers knitted scratchy wools using needles. When those patrons step inside Rare Purls Yarn Boutique and Knitterie, they'll realize that knitting can honor the classics while also paying tribute to the modern times we live in.

The store, owned by Luke Mather, offers a large selection of luxury yarns and designer patterns featuring such names as Debbie Bliss and Classic Elite Yarns.

Purl's mother, Kay, also teaches knitting, crochet and hand spinning, and the shop welcomes people to bring their projects in and to pull up a chair. For more information, call 770-910-7626 or visit www.rarepurls.net.

Snellville man cited for 50 years at same job

LITHONIA - In June 1959, Charlie King started his career as a service technician at a tractor company. Fifty years later, the Snellville resident is doing the same job with the same company - an unusual feat in these times of job-jumping.

King started work at the Ponce De Leon Tractor company in Lithonia, now doing business as Lashley Tractor Sales.

Over five decades, King said he has seen many changes in the business. "When I started, farming equipment was dominant in the Atlanta area. In the '60s and '70s, backhoe sales began booming, followed by skid-steer loaders in the '80s and '90s, and now we are seeing a lot of track loaders."

The company recognized King at a luncheon in his honor June 23.
