DFCS seeking school supply help

LAWRENCEVILLE - The Gwinnett Department of Family and Children Services is seeking the community's support in providing the county's foster children and those in protective services with new book bags filled with grade-appropriate school supplies.

The department is asking community members to donate new book bags that are attractive, sturdy and generously filled with school supplies such as three-ring binders, spiral notebooks, lined notebook paper, pens and pencils, small calculators, colored markers and other office supplies.

Theme bags are popular among kindergartners and first graders. For middle elementary through high school students, colored backpacks are preferred over black.

A list of supplies suggested or required by Gwinnett County schools can be obtained by contacting Volunteer Resource Coordinator Deborah Barinowski at 678-518-5758 or debarinowski@dhr.state.ga.us.

Those wishing to participate should deliver their donations between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. July 27 and 28 at the Georgia National Guard Armory, 261 E. Crogan St., Lawrenceville. Those who can't make it during that time should contact Barinowski to arrange a later drop-off date. Bags should be marked with the target grade and gender.

For those who want to help but cannot shop, DFCS is also accepting monetary donations. Checks should be marked "Book Bag Donation" or "Volunteer Fund." The office is located at One Justice Square, 446 W. Crogan St., Lawrenceville, GA 30045.

Volunteers are also needed July 27 through Aug. 7 to assist with the intake and distribution of the book bags. Half- and whole-day shifts are available. Contact Barinowski for more information.
