'Harry Potter' enchants fans with $58.2M opening day
LOS ANGELES - A long school break has been kind to 'Harry Potter.'
After a two-year gap since the last film, 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' opened with a whopping $58.2 million domestically in its first day, distributor Warner Bros. said Thursday.
'Half-Blood Prince' also conjured up $45.8 million in 33 other countries where it opened Wednesday, among them Great Britain, France, Germany, Australia and Japan. That gave the film a worldwide total of $104 million.
Domestically, the movie had the best single-day haul yet for the franchise and the fourth-best daily gross ever, behind last year's 'The Dark Knight' at $67.2 million, this summer's 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' at $62 million and 2007's 'Spider-Man 3' at $59.8 million.
Astronaut Alan Bean opens Smithsonian art exhibit
WASHINGTON - Alan Bean uses bits of lunar dust and tiny slices of space suit patches to bring the moon closer to people who will never have a chance to go there.
The Apollo 12 moon walker left NASA 28 years ago to chart a new career as an artist, inspired by his astronaut experience.
On Thursday, the largest exhibition of his work ever mounted, 'Alan Bean: Painting Apollo, First Artist on Another World,' opened at the National Air and Space Museum - in time for Monday's 40th anniversary celebration of the first human steps on the moon.
Cops investigate burglary at Bloom's home
LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles police say they are investigating a break-in at Orlando Bloom's Los Angeles home.
Police spokeswoman Amanda Betat said officers responded to the 32-year-old actor's home Wednesday afternoon.
She said police were called to the home by one of Bloom's relatives, who reported that it had been burglarized. Some cash and jewelry was reported stolen, but police did not release an amount.
