BUFORD - Police believe the partially decomposed body of an adult male discovered Wednesday night in a wooded area near Buford had been there at least a week.
An area resident discovered the body, partially wrapped in plastic, when he was investigating a foul odor near his home about 9 p.m., police said. The body lay about 70 feet from Woodward Mill Road, between Satellite Boulevard and Interstate 985, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli. Police secured the scene but awaited daylight before conducting an investigation, Schiralli said. "(The body) was in stages of decomposition," he said. "Preliminary reports state he's been there for more than a week." Schiralli said police had yet to determine the race or approximate age of the man. He was unsure if the victim was carrying identification, he said. "These cases are really hard to solve," Schiralli said. "We have to first identify the body; from there we have to figure out who this man was associated with." Schiralli said the case is being investigated as a homicide. He couldn't confirm media reports that the body was decapitated or otherwise mutilated. Gwinnett police urge anyone with information to call investigators at 770-513-5300 or Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS. Tipsters could earn a reward of up to $2,000.More like this story
