DULUTH - A 22-year-old Duluth man is behind bars for killing his passenger in a drunken crash early Friday morning, police said.
Clint Gercone, 24, of Berkeley Lake, died in the single-vehicle crash about 1:30 a.m. on Lake Shore Drive near Ridge Road in Duluth. He was the sole passenger in a 1997 Nissan truck driven by Christopher Davis, who remains at the Gwinnett County Jail without bond.
According to police, Davis lost control of the truck while trying to negotiate a curve in the road. The truck left the roadway, struck a mailbox and drainage culvert, flipped, and landed upright.
Davis drove a short distance from the crash scene before noticing Gercone was unresponsive, at which point he called 911, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli.
Emergency responders found Gercone dead at the scene. Exactly how he incurred injury was not immediately clear.
"The medical examiner will have to make that determination," Schiralli said.
Davis' blood-alcohol level exceeded the legal limit of .08 grams, according to his arrest warrant. He's charged with felony vehicular homicide, DUI, hit and run, and other traffic violations.
Records show the arrest isn't Davis' first for a DUI crash resulting in injury.
He was convicted in 2005 of drunkenly crashing a vehicle on Webb Gin House Road. His vehicle struck a privacy fence and injured a bystander, court documents show.
A judge sentenced Davis to 12 months probation and 10 days confinement for charges that included DUI and driving with a revoked license.
