LAWRENCEVILLE - The Lawrenceville Council voted unanimously Monday to lease the former train depot to the city's Downtown Development Authority to market as a potential restaurant site or another use beneficial to the community.
The initial term of the lease for the depot, located at Clayton and Depot streets, would be five years with the DDA paying rent of $10 a year to the city. The lease would be renewable for three, five-year periods.
"In the Downtown Overlay District, that part of the city is designated for an entertainment district," Councilman P.K. Martin said. "We hope the DDA will use the property to move forward to attract a restaurant or other similar establishment."
In other action, the council approved the first reading of an ordinance to increase the hotel/motel tax in the city from 5 percent to 8 percent.
The first reading of an ordinance clarifying height, size and setback requirements for free-standing signs also passed.
On second reading, the council changed the municipal court fee structure to allow to city to retain 8 percent instead of 5 percent of the fees.
Action on the second reading of zoning ordinance amendments prohibiting construction of metal buildings in business, office-institutional and manufacturing districts in the city was tabled pending further discussion during the next council work session.
The council granted a waiver to a moratorium on metal buildings requested by Lawrenceville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5255 for an outdoor picnic pavilion. The structure had already been planned by the VFW post before the moratorium was imposed by the council in April.
The low bid of $69,440 submitted by Gary's Grading and Pipeline Co. was accepted for stormwater utility improvements in the city.
