According to Michelle Long, a spokeswoman for Gwinnett Public Libraries, the 20,000-square-foot building will be Gwinnett's first green library branch by incorporating sustainable building elements and construction practices.

"In accordance with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards, construction activities are being carefully managed to ensure that the impact on the site and surroundings are minimized," Long said. "Many of the materials used in the library contain recycled content, such as the bricks and structural steel."

She also said that 98 percent of the construction waste associated with the project has already been recycled.

She said the Hamilton Mill branch, in addition to offering traditional library services and collections, will also provide unique educational opportunities for those interested in learning more about sustainability. She also said that in the future, she hopes all libraries will be LEED certified.
