Boy, 3, evaluated after near-drowning

SNELLVILLE - A 3-year-old boy was evaluated Wednesday at an Atlanta hospital after nearly drowning in a private pool, authorities said.

The child, who was not identified, was alert and breathing when emergency personnel responded to a backyard pool in the 4100 block of Zoar Church Road in Snellville.

The boy had been swimming with family when he went under about 3:40 p.m. His mother told authorities she had been in the pool with her boy and turned away "for only a minute," Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge said.

The boy was out of the water when firefighters arrived. He was transported to Scottish Rite Hospital for evaluation, Rutledge said.
