LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett police opened fire and killed an armed suspect during an early morning cocaine raid Wednesday in Lawrenceville.
Three officers encountered the unidentified man in the bedroom of a home at 1077 Cedar Oak Court, where he pointed a handgun at officers and was shot, according to police. He died at the scene.
"The officers feared for their safety," Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli said.
A second unidentified man who tried to flee the residence, located off Cedars Road near Old Fountain Road and Ga. Highway 124, was apprehended and arrested, police said.
Schiralli said officers announced their presence in English and Spanish while knocking on the front and back doors of the home, tucked in a cul-de-sac of the Cedar Oak subdivision. They forced entry when nobody responded.
The three Gwinnett officers, working undercover, were serving a warrant at the home to assist the DEA, Schiralli said. They were placed on routine administrative leave, pending an internal investigation.
Schiralli said it was unknown early Wednesday if cocaine or other drugs were seized in the home.
"Once the shooting happened, the house was secured, and we had to get another search warrant," he said.
He said the suspects' names will be released once their identities are confirmed and next of kin is notified. The department's deadly force investigation team is looking into the shooting.
