Mr. Myron Edward Gilliland, 86, of Buford, GA died on Wednesday, January 28, 2009. Born on March 3, 1922, Mr. Gilliland was the youngest of the five children of Lake and Minnie Gilliland of Jackson County. He married Latrelle Thurmond on February 10, 1945 and moved to the Buford area, where he lived the remainder of his life. Mr. Gilliland was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He lived a happy, blessed life, marked by his love and devotion to God, his wonderful disposition and his dedication to family and friends. He was loved by many, and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. As one of the last living workers of the Bona Allen “harness shop”, Mr. Gilliland's name is engraved on a statue of Roy Rogers, Trigger and Jack Johnson, located in historic Buford, commemorating the saddle made for Trigger by the Bona Allen Company in the late 1940s. Mr. Gilliland then went to work for General Motors at the Doraville assembly plant where he was a member of UAW Local 10 and retried in 1980 after 32 years of service. Mr. Gilliland accepted Christ as his savior in the summer of 1944. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Buford, a former Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent. Mr. Gilliland is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Latrelle Thurmond Gilliland of Buford; his daughter, Joan Brown of Flowery Branch; his daughters and son in law Martha Jo & Ronald Martin of Canon, and Judy & Jerry Parks of Buford; his sons and daughters in law Ricky & Janice Gilliland and Ronny & Joan Gilliland, both of Buford; his sisters Nell Heard and Ola Adams, both of Buford; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews and cousins. Mr. Gilliland was preceded in death by his parents Lake and Minnie Gilliland, his brother Paul Gilliland of Buford, his sister Myrtie Jones of Gainesville, and his son in law Robert Brown of Buford. The family will receive visitors at Flanigan Funeral Home in Buford on Friday, January 30th from 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. The funeral will be on Saturday, January 31st at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Buford, with interment immediately following, also at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Gilliland will lie in state at the church beginning at 1:30 p.m. Officiating ministers will be Rev. Larry Waddell, Rev. Jody Martin, Rev. Jack Pierce and with graveside service by Rev.
