Gwinnett County will be an even bigger hub for bicycle racing this year thanks to an alliance announced Tuesday by the Gwinnett Sports Commission.
The GSC, a division of the Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau, has joined up with TopView Sports and Swagger.us to form the Georgia Cycling Grand Prix, a year-long cycling series throughout the state. The series' 10-race schedule will be anchored by the long-running Athens Twilight Criterium and the third annual Gwinnett Bike Fest, scheduled for July 21-26 this summer at various locations in the county. Competitors on the series will compete for overall points titles, prize money and end of the season awards. "The events that comprise the Georgia Cycling Gran Prix have been around for several years, with the Athens Twilight hosting its 30th year of racing, as well as the third annual Gwinnett Bike Fest," the GSC's Pete Sherrard said. "We are extremely excited to bring racing to all skill levels across the entire state." In addition to Bike Fest, Gwinnett will host three other Georgia Cycling Gran Prix events this year. The first is the TopView Classic, scheduled for Feb. 28 to March 1 in Lawrenceville. The other two Gwinnett events will surround Bike Fest - the June 27-28 Cycle for Parkinsons in Dacula and Lawrenceville and the Aug. 29-30 Summer Finale Weekend in Lawrenceville and Loganville. The schedule also includes races in Albany, Augusta, Sandy Springs, Dahlonega and Beaufort, S.C. For more information, visit www.GeorgiaCycling.net.More like this story
