SNELLVILLE - A 61-year-old woman died Monday morning in a two-car collision with a Gwinnett police cruiser that also hospitalized an officer.
Neither the officer nor the crash victim were identified Monday. The officer, a two-year veteran assigned to the South Precinct, was transported with minor injuries to Gwinnett Medical Center.
The woman, a resident of the Snellville area, later died at Eastside Medical Center, police said.
The collision happened about 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of Centerville Highway and Chesterfield Court in Snellville.
Gwinnett police spokeswoman Cpl. Illana Spellman said the female motorist was attempting to turn left in an older-model Dodge Intrepid onto southbound Centerville Highway, when she pulled into the officer's path.
The car driven by the officer, heading northbound on the highway in a marked Chevy Impala, T-boned the Intrepid, Spellman said.
Both the officer and the victim, who was traveling alone, wore seat belts, Spellman said.
Whether the officer will remain on active duty "depends on the final outcome of the investigation," Spellman said. "It's too early to make that determination at this time."
Spellman said there was no indication Monday that excessive speed was a factor in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
