LAWRENCEVILLE - For Gwinnett deputies, a "routine" traffic stop Friday morning turned out to be anything but.
Deputies pulled over a vehicle driven by Santiago Valdovinos-Moreno, of Othello, Wash., on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road after they said he failed to maintain his lane, according to reports. While deputies were speaking with Valdovinos-Moreno, according to sheriff's department spokeswoman Stacey Bourbannais, he pushed a deputy and fled on foot. Valdovinos-Moreno was soon captured and charged with obstruction of a law enforcement officer. A search of Valdovinos-Moreno's vehicle revealed a duffel bag containing more than $1 million in cash, which was seized by authorities. Valdovinos-Moreno is being held at the Gwinnett County Jail on a $1 million cash-only bond. In a separate incident, deputies seized an additional $10,000 in cash and about 10 pounds of methamphetamine after executing a search warrant at a Gravel Springs Road home in Buford. Bourbannais said the department had received information about drugs and "drug proceeds" possibly being inside the rental property. Bourbannais added that the investigation is ongoing.More like this story
