VIRGINIA Dr. Virginia Strange Hammond died January 6 at 7:10 p.m. in Lawrenceville, GA. It was the day before her 71st birthday. Dr. Hammond was born in Alexandria, LA and grew up in Starkville, MS and Baton Rouge, LA where she graduated at Baton Rouge High School and Louisiana State University. She received Bachelor of Science and medical degrees at LSU where she was the only woman in her Cardiology specialty. She did her internship and Internal Medicine residency at Mercy Catholic Medical Center in Philadelphia. She continued her internal medicine residency at Nassau County Medical Center in East Meadowbrook, NY where she spent six months on Cardiology at which time she began doing pacemakers, consults and clinics. She also began doing cardiac catheterization including coronary arteriograms. Dr. Hammond practiced medicine in Baton Rouge where she was chief of medicine at Baton Rouge General Hospital. She was also Chief of the cardiovascular diagnostic unit at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge. She later moved to Tampa, FL with her husband, Joe Hammond. She was affiliated with St. Joseph's Hospital, Tampa General Hospital, University Community Hospital and AMI Town & Country Medical Center. After her husband's death, she moved to Lawrenceville where she lived with her daughter, Suzanna Sligh, until her death. She was associated with various organizations and committees and was chairman of the Louisiana State Education Committee of the American Heart Association. She was vice president and secretary-treasurer of the East Baton Rouge Academy of Internal Medicine. Dr. Hammond was a member of various academic and social organizations, including Phi Kappa Phi, Nu Sigma Rho, Alpha Epsilon Delta, Chemistry Honor Society, Chi Omega, Delta Gamma Delta and Women's Medical Fraternity of which she served as president. She is survived by two daughters, Penny Rowlett and Ms. Sligh; two grandsons, Duncan and Evan Sligh; two granddaughters, Claire and Elaine Bryan, and two brothers, Dr. Charles “Bo” and Dr. David Strange. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence “Pop” Strange, a former husband Dr. Ted Thurmond and her husband, Mr. Hammond. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM, Friday, January 9, 2009 in the Lawrenceville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home.
