SUWANEE - With Gwinnett County's top wrestling team not at this year's county meet, it was expected to be a wide open tournament.
It turned out to be another title for traditional power Parkview.
The Panthers had one county champ, but pulled away with a final score of 205.50 points to win the program's 12th county championship, the most by any school.
"I know it's a little different with Collins Hill not bringing its No. 1 team, but it's still a big deal for us," Parkview coach Tom Beuglas said.
Defending state champion Collins Hill, the No. 1 team in the state, sent its No. 1 varsity team to The Clash, a prestigious national tournament in Minnesota, and had its No. 2 team compete at the county meet.
While first place wasn't as wide open as expected, second through fourth was decided by half a point.
Brookwood and Peachtree Ridge tied for second with 171.50 points. The second place finishes are the best in school history for the two programs. Grayson was fourth with 171 points. Dacula was fifth with 153 points and Collins Hill's No. 2 team was sixth with 135.50 points.
"We've been the underdog all year long," Brookwood coach Chris Cicora said. "This is a special group that fights until the end. I thought we could do well, but there's a lot of competition in the county."
Brookwood had seven wrestlers place in the top four, including five county finalists. The Broncos' Joe Epps was the only county champ at 130 pounds.
Peachtree Ridge had the most county champions with four. Michael and Matt Chapman won their weight classes, becoming the sixth set of brothers to accomplish the feat in the same year and the first since 1999 when Collins Hill's Andy and Joey Guiler won county crowns.
Alan Gigolaev (160) and Sam Kuntz (189) were also county champs for the Lions. Kuntz defeated Grayson's Paul Ardilla 3-2 in one of the biggest finals matchups of the day.
Parkview took control of the two-day tournament on Friday when it put 10 wrestlers in the semifinals. The Panthers emerged with four in the finals and just one county champion in Matt Johnson.
The junior, who is 28-0, beat Brookwood's Corban Nilson 3-2 to claim the 215-pound county title.
"Coming in to the tournament, Coach Beuglas said it was up for grabs," Johnson said. "But we felt like we could win it."
Second-year wrestler Robbie Kane (112 pounds), Clint Jones (125) and Alex Hillis (135) were Parkview's other finalists.
Quade Sewell (119) and Frank Gaddy (189) were third. Taz Torbitt (130) and Jesse Forte (171) placed fourth. Forte has only wrestled for two weeks and beat No. 1 seed and defending county champ Billy Merfert from Shiloh in the second round.
"We don't have any superstars like we've had in year's past," Beuglas said. "But we got a lot of kids that can score points for us every time."
Parkview has won six of the seven tournaments it has competed in the season.
"We've exceeded peoples' expectations," Beuglas said. "I'm pretty thrilled with the win."
Collins Hill's Drew Ferguson (103) and Joseph Doyague (112), Dacula's Noah Hunt (119), Central's Devante Brown (125), Buford's Billy Anderton (135) and Scottie Forrester (152), and Grayson's Zach George (140) and Mike Dixon (285) also won county championships.
